Art gives us something to talk about.
untitled mom project is intended to be understood as a private conversation between myself and the viewer. During the course of our conversation I relate stories about the loss of my mom and about the ways that our actions make lasting meaning for the people they touch.
The work is displayed on a small screen with attached headphones; a setup meant to reinforce the feeling that only myself and the viewer are participating in this intimate conversation. At the end of its 13-minute runtime the video loops and invites another viewer in.
Over the years I've written, directed, shot and edited a number of short, narrative films ranging in length from 5-20 minutes each. These were shown at a number of film screenings including:
5th Avenue Cinema's "Visuals" Film Festival (2013)
- skate|or|skate|or|cry (short)
PDX 48 Hour Film Festival (2011-2013)
- A Family Film (2012)
- Gold Team Rules (2013) - Winner "Best Experimental Film"
Portland Monthly "Stew" (2014)
- who are they (short)
In 2012 I helped to create a film festival of the future. Entrants were asked to submit short films of any style or genre loosely themed around the theme of the "the future", with a maximum length of 7 minutes each. I coordinated the space, solicited short-film entries (of which there were 7) and created promotional video and graphic content leading up to the event.
From 2013-2014 I was a member of Portland State University's "Time Arts Club", an on-campus group that put on monthly Art "Happenings". As part of the Time Arts Club I was responsible for editing the promotional and documentary videos and helping to coordinate each event. I also regularly exhibited looping installation videos at each Happening.
- i had fun once (2013)
- invasion of the astroshapes (2013)
- video hypnosis (2014)
- digital paintings (2014)
My experimental works often used glitch imagery, found footage from digitized VHS tapes, abstract 3D animation and generative video content. I used absurd humor and, at times, earnest emotional content in an attempt to give them some appeal outside of strictly experimental spaces. These videos found homes at various experimental film screenings around Portland, Oregon including:
Portland Monthly "Stew" (2014)
- who are they (short)
- show me the money (short)
Experimental Film Fest PDX III (2014)
- the pepsi trilogy (short)
Boathouse Microcinema Launch (2017)
- assorted films
I performed live video projections as part of an improvisational noise ensemble called (V)!_!(V). My projection instrument was built in Max/MSP + Jitter and utilized premade glitch video remixed with found VHS footage.
